Treating postsurgical scalp scars with follicular unit hair transplantation

In May 2019 the international journal BioMed Research International published a paper co-authored by Dr. Moh Jae-seong and Professor Ji-Ung Park’s team at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Seoul National University. It reports the results of treating postsurgical scalp scars with FUE hair transplants.
The study included 15 patients with areas of scalp where hair no longer grew because of surgical scars. Each received a single transplant session at about 35 follicular units per cm², and graft survival and scar scores were checked 12 months later.
At 12 months the mean graft survival rate was 80.67% (range 70–90%). The Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) score fell from a mean of 24.47 before surgery to 11.60 after. A lower score means a less noticeable scar.
These are results from a study of 15 patients; individual results vary with the condition of the scar.
